Promenades and footpaths

According to how demanding they are the promenades and footpaths are divided into 2 groups: sea-promenades and easy and more difficult footpaths.

The sea-promenades are suitable for the widest circle of walkers. They lead along the island’s shores, bays and coves and through hundred-year-old pine forests.A walk along Čikat Cove, where Lošinj’s ladies used to wait for their seamen to return home, past beautiful villas of Austrian nobility, will remind you strongly of the past. The cove owes its present-day appearance to the three distinguished scientists, Dr. Leopold Ritter von Schrotter, Dr. Alfred Edler von Manussi and Dr. Conrad Clar, after whom the promenades were named. In the southern part of the cove stands the monument to Ambroz Haračić, Mali Lošinj’s teacher and a particularly significant personality, who devoted his whole life to the study of climate and vegetation of his native island. The sea-promenade also leads along Sunčana (Sunny) Cove. Its natural features, the flat rocks on the beach and the crystal-clear sea make it a unique natural treasure.

On the other side of the island a sea-promenade connects Mali and Veli Lošinj. We recommend all the visitors of the island to take a walk to Veli Lošinj, the first island settlement, then enjoy a stroll through its narrow streets and have a look at the luxurious villas of one-time sea captains.Do visit the little fishermen’s harbour of Rovenska with its beautiful beach, a break-water, as well as an air of a traditional fishing village.Do not leave out a visit to the little fishermen’s harbour of St. Martin, where the history of Mali Lošinj began. The town graveyard and the church of St. Martin, the town patron, are situated there.

Easy footpaths are also suitable for the widest circle of walkers, but unlike the sea-promenades, they cross the wonderful interior of the island.Particularly interesting are the paths that start from the church of St. Nicholas and lead through olive groves and a pine forest. It is believed that the beginnings of Veli Lošinj can be traced back to this area.

More demanding footpaths are suitable for active walkers, or hikers, for they include steeper parts and partly pass over more difficult ground. The attractiveness of these paths lies in the unspoilt environment and the numerous vantage-points, which offer magnificent views over the archipelago.

HIKING TRAIL NEREZINE – OSORŠĆICA: It leads along the northern part of the island of Lošinj and stretches for about 10 kilometres. The highest peak is Televrin with 588 m.Osoršćica was the first island mountain that attracted the attention of tourists, among them the Austrian-Hungarian heir-to-the-throne Rudolph of Habsburg, who mounted it as far back as 1887. One can set out to the top from two directions, Osor and Nerezine. And when you reach the top, you will be rewarded by a wonderful view of the whole Lošinj archipelago, the coast of Istria, Mount Velebit, even the region of Gorski kotar, Mount Triglav and the islands of Rab, Pag and Silba. Do not leave out a visit to the chapel of St. Nicholas and the cave of St. Gaudentius. You can refresh yourself in the mountain hut, which is open to all visitors during the summer months. This hill is a real challenge not only for hikers but also for all those who enjoy a good walking-tour.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: The more difficult footpaths require wearing strong sports shoes or climbing boots. It is necessary to take water or fruit juice, particularly in the summer. The hundred-year-old stone walls should never be pulled down.Should a stone fall down, put it back in place. The wooden latticed gates should always be closed behind you. When you come across an animal, behave naturally, calm down and watch.Follow the signs and do not use the paths without them. There are many unused footpaths on the island that are not suitable to take.

NOTE: On the islands of the Cres-Lošinj archipelago there are no poisonous snakes.According to a legend these islands were blessed by St. Gaudentius, Bishop of Osor, and poisonous snakes were banished forever. As long as the scientists do not provide an explanation, let us believe the legend.
