Fishing
Fishing is possible all year round, and on December 26. the underwater fishing tournament is held.
The best confirmation of how highly the people of Lošinj regard the spear fishing skill is the monument to a spear fisherman erected in one of the town squares. The mild Mediterranean climate the island is blessed with enables its inhabitants to provide spear fishermen with the unforgettable experience of competing just before New Year. The New Year Championship comprises two cups: New Year Cities Cup and European Nations Cup; both cups are equally attractive because each dive-in takes one’s breath away and results in loud cheering by the audience. It is an opportunity to celebrate the New Year in the company of extremely brave people and a truly sportsmanlike environment.
This Cup has often been also the European Cup Final for more than forty years. In the course of the past years spear fishing in the Lošinj submarine maritime zone is pursued by all the great representatives of international spear-fishing. None of them failed to appear.
On 18 July 2007, Daniel Gospić from Mali Lošinj became the European champion in underwater fishing at the Championships held in Rota, near Cadiz in Spain.
Winning a gold medal, Daniel Gospić brought to the rich treasury of Croatian trophies the first gold medal won at major competitions.
Lošinj will host the World Championship 2010 in spear-fishing. Through a ruling of CMAS, the International Federation for Underwater Activities, hosting of the World Championship in Spear-Fishing 2010 was awarded to Croatia – i.e. joint candidacy of two clubs from the island of Lošinj – Recreational Fishing Association „Udica“ from Mali Lošinj and Recreational Association „Škarpina“ from Nerezina.
Foreign citizens can engage in recreational-sports fishing, provided they possess a license. The license can be obtained at the Rijeka Port Authority every day, from 00.00 to 24.00, or in any of its branches. There are daily, week-end, weekly, monthly licenses and they are required for fishing from both shore and vessel.
The fishing license for big fish (tunas, scabbard fish, swordfish) is issued for a seven-day period (500 kuna), and you are permitted to catch only one fish a day. Two hand-trolls with unlimited hook size can be used.
